James H. Cavanaugh, Ph. D.
Chairman, Cardiokine, Inc.

Dr. Cavanaugh has been a Managing Director of HealthCare Ventures LLC since 1988. He was previously President of SmithKline & French Laboratories-U.S., the domestic pharmaceutical division of SmithKline Beckman Corporation. He had been President of SmithKline Beckman’s clinical laboratory business and President of Allergan International.

Earlier, Dr. Cavanaugh served in numerous senior posts with the U.S. Government on the White House staff and before that at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Prior to that, he was a member of the faculty of the College of Medicine and the Graduate College at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Cavanaugh serves as a member of the Board of Directors of four public companies: Shire Pharmaceuticals Group PLC (non-executive Chairman), Diversa Corporation (Chairman) MedImmune, Inc. and Advancis Pharmaceutical Corporation.

Dr. Cavanaugh received his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from the University of Iowa.


Andrew N. Schiff, M.D.
Managing Director, Aisling Capital, Perseus-Soros Biopharmaceutical Fund, Board Member

Dr. Schiff serves as a Managing Director, Aisling Capital, a position held since 1999. Prior to that, Dr. Schiff practiced internal medicine at The New York Presbyterian Hospital where he maintains his position as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine.

In addition to serving on the Cardiokine Board, Dr. Schiff also serves as a director of Adams Respiratory Therapeutics, Inc., ArgiNOx Pharmaceuticals, Bioenvision, Inc., and SkinMedica, Inc..Dr. Schiff received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College and his M.B.A. from Columbia University. His bachelor's degree in neuroscience was awarded with honors by Brown University.


Arthur M. Feldman, M.D., Ph.D.
Founder, Chief Scientific Advisor, Board Member

Dr. Feldman is the Chairman of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College and one of the nation's leading cardiologists. He has a long-standing interest in both the molecular and clinical aspects of congestive heart failure (CHF). At the molecular level, he has been focused on identifying genes that serve as markers for CHF. At the clinical level, he has studied the use of genetically engineered proteins to treat the disease.

Dr. Feldman received his undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College, his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, and his M.D. from Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He was an intern, resident, cardiology fellow and faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and later associate professor of medicine and director of the Peter Belfer Laboratory for the Molecular Biology of Heart Failure at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In addition, he was director of the heart failure research program in the Johns Hopkins' Division of Cardiology.

In 1994, Dr. Feldman moved to Pittsburgh as the Harry S. Tack Professor of Medicine and Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where he was Chief of the Division of Cardiology and also directed the Cardiovascular Institute of the UPMC Health System.

In 2002, he assumed the position of Magee Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine as a Diplomate in internal medicine and as a Diplomate in cardiovascular disease. His special interests include congestive heart failure and cardiac transplantation.

Dr. Feldman has served on the editorial boards of numerous medical journals including Circulation Research and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, has served as senior editor for Congestive Heart Failure and associate editor of the Journal of Cardiac Failure.


Stephen Knight, M.D.
Managing Partner, Fidelity Biosciences

Dr. Knight has worked in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries for over sixteen years. Prior to joining Fidelity Biosciences in 2003, Dr. Knight was president and chief operating officer for EPIX Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, Massachusetts. For six years before joining EPIX, Dr. Knight worked at Arthur D. Little Inc., primarily as a senior consultant in Cambridge and Brussels, Belgium specializing in mergers and acquisitions in the pharmaceutical industry. Prior to 1990, Dr. Knight performed research at AT&T Bell Laboratories (now Lucent Technologies), the National Institutes of Health, and at Yale University.

Dr. Knight holds an M.D. from the Yale University School of Medicine and an M.B.A. from the Yale School of Organization and Management. Dr. Knight received a B.S. in biology from Columbia University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

Dr. Knight currently serves as chairman of the Board of Directors for Veritas Medicine and EnVivo Pharmaceuticals. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Microbia, U.S. Genomics, and FoldRx Pharmaceuticals.


Jan Leschly
Chairman & Partner of Care Capital

Mr. Leschly is Chairman & Partner of Care Capital. Before founding Care Capital, Mr. Leschly was Chief Executive of SmithKline Beecham PLC from 1994 to 2000. He joined the company as Chairman of the Worldwide Pharmaceutical business in 1990 and was elected to the Board of Directors in 1990.

Before joining SmithKline Beecham, Mr. Leschly served as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Squibb Corporation. He joined Squibb in 1979 as Vice President of Commercial Development and in 1984 he was elected Group Vice President and a Member of the Board of Directors with responsibility for the Worldwide Pharmaceuticals Products Group. Prior to this he worked for seven years with Novo Nordisk, where he served as Executive Vice President and President of the Pharmaceutical Division.

Mr. Leschly is a member of the Boards of Directors of American Express, Viacom and the Maersk Group, and serves on the International Advisory Board of DaimlerChrysler AG. He is a Member of the Business Council and the Emory University Goizueta Business School Dean's Advisory Council.

Born in Denmark, Mr. Leschly received a Master of Science in Pharmacy from the Copenhagen College of Pharmacy and a B.S. in Business Administration from the Copenhagen School of Economics and Business Administration.

Before his business career, Mr. Leschly made his name in professional tennis, achieving the rank of 10th in the world in 1967. He serves as Chairman of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.


Shahzad Malik, M.D.
General Partner at Advent Venture Partners

Dr. Shahzad Malik is a General Partner at Advent Venture Partners which he joined in 1999. Prior to joining Advent he spent six years practising medicine, before joining the London office of management consultants McKinsey & Company. Here he served international clients in the Healthcare and Investment Banking sectors. During his time with Advent he has been actively involved with numerous investments in Europe and the United States in the biopharmaceutical and medical device arenas.

Dr. Malik gained an MA from Oxford University, and a MD from Cambridge University. He subsequently specialised in interventional cardiology, whilst also pursuing research interests in heart muscle disorders both in the clinic and basic science laboratory.


Davey S. Scoon
Chair of the Audit Committee

Mr. Scoon joined CardioKine’s Board of Directors in 2005. Since October 2003, he has been Chief Administrative and Financial Officer of Tom’s of Maine. He also serves as Non-Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tufts Health Plan, where he has been a director since 1981. Prior to joining Tom's of Maine, Mr. Scoon served as Chief Administrative and Financial Officer for SunLife Financial from 1999 to 2003. From 1985 to 1999, Mr. Scoon was employed by Liberty Funds Group of Boston (formerly Colonial Management) as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Scoon holds a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
